Biography JEFFREY STOCK composes a wide range of music, from the Tony-nominated Broadway musical TRIUMPH OF LOVE starring Betty Buckley and F. Murray Abraham, to a symphonic and choral commission premiered at Carnegie Hall featuring the world's most renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. He wrote the music and lyrics for A ROOM WITH A VIEW, produced at the San Diego Old Globe and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theater. He has won a Guggenheim Fellowship for music, an NEA grant, the Jonathan Larson Award, and has twice been a finalist for the Kleban Prize for lyrics. He is also a music critic, food blogger, teacher and photographer.
His songs have been performed and recorded by such award-winning artists as Norm Lewis, Melissa Errico, Kelli O'Hara, Susan Egan, Joan Morris & William Bolcom, Karen Mason, Chuck Cooper, Karen Ziemba, Malcolm Gets, Judy Kuhn, and Terrence Mann.
He has earned residencies at artist colonies including McDowell, Millay, and Blue Mountain Center. Since 1999, he has spent several months a year living in Bali, Indonesia, intensively studying the local language, customs and music. In 1994 he had the opportunity to study in Japan with legendary composer Toru Takemitsu. For ten years he served as musical theater columnist and critic for Tower Records' national music magazine PULSE! He is also the author of the food blog fooditude.com. Jeffrey's Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical TRIUMPH OF LOVE, has received over 100 productions at theaters across the country and has been translated into multiple languages, including German and Japanese.
A ROOM WITH A VIEW, a new romantic musical comedy, based on the classic E.M. Forster novel, had its world premiere at the San Diego Old Globe directed by Scott Schwartz. It features a book by Marc Acito, music & lyrics by Jeffrey Stock. A subsequent production at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle was directed by David Armstrong. Jeffrey and Marc have also been commissioned by the 5th Avenue Theater to write a new musical about an infamous art forger, called DUTCH MASTER, which was recently workshopped in New York by Prospect Theater Company and the York Theatre.
Jeffrey was one of the composers of the Off-Broadway musical SONGS FROM AN UNMADE BED, which was presented to great acclaim at New York Theatre Workshop. A number of his songs have also been commissioned and premiered by the New York Festival of Song. He has recently been commissioned by a Chinese theater company to compose a new musical about the Jewish ghetto of Shanghai. Concerts
Jeffreys's hour-long symphonic and choral commission LULIE THE ICEBERG premiered at Carnegie Hall featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Pamela Frank and saxophonist Paul Winter, narrated by Sam Waterston. Based on a book by Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado of Japan, LULIE was recorded on Sony Classical and has also been performed and televised in Poland.
Since 2008 he has concertized and lectured extensively in China. He conducted a concert in Beijing, featuring Broadway stars singing from the great American songbook. Since then, he has taught master classes in music drama at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, the Shanghai Music Conservatory and Beijing's Central Academy of Drama.
In 2016 he was commissioned by Lincoln Center to write the music and lyrics of a song for their series called LINCOLN CENTER ORIGINALS: SONGWRITERS. An evening devoted to his theater songs was produced at New York's Joe's Pub in 2002. His operetta THE VOICE OF TEMPERANCE, based on Prohibition texts, was commissioned by George C. Wolfe and workshopped in 1995 at the Joseph Papp Public Theater. He also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to write the score and libretto for a new opera based on Boccaccio's Decameron, entitled LODOVICO.
