Martin Gotfrit
Composer

Biography

Martin Gotfrit is an interdisciplinary composer/performer whose work mostly involves collaborations with other artists: filmmakers, choreographers, poets and other composer/performers.

Born in Montréal in 1952, he studied music composition and film at Concordia University (B.A. '74) and electroacoustic music and communications at McGill University (M.A. '77). A founding member of the improvisational ensemble "Metamusic" ('70-'76), he continued his exploration of live electronic music improvisation in Vancouver where he co-founded the group "Hextremities" ('80-'85). Since 1981 he has been on the faculty of the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University where he teaches electroacoustic music and film sound.

Martin directs the film sound and scoring program of the Contemporary Arts Summer Institute and since 1989 has been the manager of the Centre for Image and Sound Reseach in Vancouver, a research centre which focuses on the involvement of the artist in the development of new tools and applications for creative work. While on sabbatical in 1988, Martin coordinated and designed a large interactive music exhibit for the British Columbia Science Centre entitled "music machines". A founding member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community, he is also a long standing board member of the Vancouver New Music Society, and was acting president for the 1990-91 season.
