Ahmed Hassan
Composer

Biography
Composer/musician Ahmed Hassan, who collaborated with many of Canada's leading contemporary choreographers and was a driving force in Toronto's emerging world music scene in the 1980s, died on Wednesday at age 55. He had suffered from progressive MS for many years and advocated forcefully for fellow sufferers and for the rights of the disabled.

Born in New York City to Egyptian parents, Hassan grew up there, in Cairo and from age 14 in Halifax where, after encountering Toronto Dance Theatre accompanist Ricardo Abreut, he abandoned biochemistry studies at Dalhousie to launch a varied, successful and largely self-taught career in music.

Hassan's last creative project, Fourteen Remembered, a requiem for the women massacred at Montreal's École Polytechnique in 1989, was performed at different Toronto venues including Massey Hall, between 1998 and 2001. Even as MS slowly robbed him of his faculties, Hassan managed to perform into the mid-1990s with his wife of more than 20 years, renowned choreographer Peggy Baker.
