Biography Paul Mathews is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He has taught as part of the Music Theory Faculty of the Conservatory since 1998. In addition to teaching the undergraduate core sequence, he taught seminars in orchestration and Introduction to Rock Music at the JHU Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. He still teaches graduate seminars in twentieth century music and the Beethoven string quartets.
He is the author/editor of Orchestration: An Anthology of Writings (Routledge, 2006) and co-author, with Phyllis Bryn-Julson, of the book Inside Pierrot lunaire: Performing the Spreschstimme in Schoenberg's Masterpiece (Scarecrow Press, 2009). His translation/commentary "Anatomie et physiologie de l'orchestre" appears in Theoria 15 (2008).
His works have been performed by the New York New Music Ensemble, The Figaro Project, Lunar Ensemble, and the Peabody Opera Theater, and he has been recognized by Meet the Composer, the Maryland State Arts Council, and ASCAP.
