Susan Hurley
Composer
Biography
Originally from New England, Susan was raised in artistic surroundings and maintains a deep interest in all art forms. She began her study of music with piano at age six, then oboe at age ten which she played in chamber music and in youth orchestras. After some years exploring dance, theater and visual art, she studied voice (Certificate in Voice from the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau) and finally returned to the piano and began her composing career. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts, her master's degree at Eastman and her doctorate at Indiana University's School of Music where she taught composition and related courses. She then chaired the Theory and Composition Department at Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan for several years before opting for the warmer climes of Los Angeles where she maintained a private teaching studio in piano, theory and composition and served occasionally as an adjunct professor at local colleges. While in Los Angeles, she scored films and theatrical productions and concurrently composed her own projects of ambient sounds, songs and opera.
Susan delights in her two grandchildren, the outdoors, gourmet cooking, swimming, anything Swedish or Irish and Argentine tango!
