Biography The music of composer Luna Pearl Woolf has been praised for its “psychological nuances and emotional depth,” by The New York Times. Her works in opera, dramatic chamber music, silent film and music-storytelling have been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Washington National Opera, Tapestry Opera, Bard Music West, Arte Musica Foundation and ECM+, among others, collaborating with artists such as Joyce DiDonato, Frederica von Stade, Evelyn Glennie, Matt Haimovitz, Marnie Breckenridge, Julian Wachner, Dennis Russell Davies, Brentano String Quartet, NOVUS NY, Deutsches Kammerorchester, and Bruckner Orchestra as well as Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons, and authors Royce Vavrek, Cornelia Funke and Eleanor Wilner. Recent commissions include Jacqueline, a new opera on the cellist Jacqueline du Pré, with librettist Royce Vavrek, commissioned by Tapestry Opera for 2019. Woolf’s Act Without Words I on the silent play by Samuel Beckett (“a fabulous new production” – San Francisco Classical Voice) was commissioned by Bard Music West. The Washington National Opera commissioned Woolf as part of its American Opera Initiative. The resulting Better Gods, Woolf’s opera on the last queen of Hawaii, was called “fascinating and heart wrenching” by DC Metro Theater Arts. Other recent works include Missa in Fines Orbis Terrae, for choir and organ, commissioned by St. James Cathedral Choir of Toronto, and But I Digress…, commissioned by New Chapter Grant awardees Collectif9 and Architek Percussion, for their 2018-19 international tour. Luna Pearl Woolf has been the subject of features and reviews in the New York Times, Associated Press, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Opera News, Strings Magazine, New Music Box, and L’Opéra, as well as on NPR, BBC, CBC, MPR and WNYC radio, among others. She co-founded the ground-breaking Oxingale Productions with cellist Matt Haimovitz in 2000, garnering several Grammy and Juno nominations and awards. Her music is available internationally on the PENTATONE Oxingale Series.
