Biography
Born in Wadi Chahrour in Lebanon in 1967, Zad Moultaka, composer and visual artist, has pursued personal research for years on visual arts and musical language. In his work as a composer, he integrates the fundamental elements of contemporary Western writing — structures, tendencies, families and symbols — with specific features of Arab music — monody, heterophony, modality, rhythms, vocals…
The slow maturation of a very personal form of expression gave rise, starting in 2003, to a series of works for which production grew little by little. From choral music to ensemble music, chamber music to soloist vocal music, from opera, electroacoustics and film music to sound systems and choreography… He began musical collaboration with many artists across the world, most notably the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne from Montréal.
In his quest for contemporary Arab expression with no concessions, Zad Moultaka created the ensemble Mezwej in 2004, a project resulting from a process, a state of mind of experimentation, research and creation through a questioning of Eastern and Western musical cultures, of the specific tension and friction between writing and speaking. In residence for three years at Royaumont Abbey, between 2007 and 2009, Mezwej opened many seasons in Beirut, Paris and Marseille, Italy and Greece.
Zad Moultaka continues to develop an increasing number of installations, performances and visual artworks. He designed the work “ŠamaŠ” for the Lebanese pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition (May-November 2017). This installation is now travelling and will go to Lebanon, Finland, England and Australia…
