Biography
Erik Johns was the librettist for companion Aaron Copland's only full-length opera, “The Tender Land.”

Johns, a dancer, was born Horace Eugene Johnston in Los Angeles. In late 1946, he met Copland, the two began an eight-year relationship and for several years Johns was Copland's secretary while living at the composer's New York home.

In 1952 Copland and Johns began work on the opera based, with Johns fashioning the story and writing the libretto under the name Horace Everett. Johns later wrote the librettos for Jack Gottlieb's opera “Tea Party” and John Schlenck's oratorio “Mission to the World.”

With Jack Kelly in the 1950s, Johns formed a company that decorated inaugural festivities for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Jimmy Carter.
