Biography
Cross-disciplinary director, designer BRIAN STAUFENBIEL is Opera Parallèle’s Creative Director and Stage Director for whom he has helmed the direction and design of the companies’ critically acclaimed productions since 2007.
His adventurous stagecraft has won critical acclaim for the company's productions — among them the recent world premiere of the reorchestration of John Harbison's The Great Gatsby and the West Coast premiere of John Rea's reorchestration of Alban Berg's Wozzeck. His cross-disciplinary staging of Philip Glass' Orphée (2011) wove cirque acrobatics, kinetic staging, and floating film projections into a surrealistic tapestry.
Recently he directed Osvaldo Golijov's Ainadamar, Barber's Trouble in Tahiti and Schoënberg's Pierrot Lunaire. Staufenbiel has directed many world premiere performances including the final version of Lou Harrison's Young Caesar, Luciano Chessa's A Heavenly Act in collaboration with SanFrancisco/Museum of Modern Art, and Allen Shearer's The Dawn Makers. Last year he directed the American Premiere of Adam Gorb's Anya 17, Francis Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias, Kurt Weill's Mahagonny Songspiel and Kirke Mechem's Tartuffe.
He is currently working on a new productions of Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, and an American premier of Tarik O’Regan’s Heart of Darkness, Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince, and a new production of Luna Woolf’s Angel Heart.
