Biography
Mary Zimmerman is the recipient of a 1998 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2002 Tony Award for Best Director of a Play and numerous Jeff Awards (including Best Production and Best Direction). She is an Artistic Associate of Goodman Theatre, a member of Lookingglass Theatre Company and a Professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University. Works which Ms. Zimmerman has adapted and directed include The Jungle Book, Metamorphoses (Broadway: Circle in the Square Theatre, Lookingglass, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Second Stage Theatre), The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci (Goodman, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Seattle Repertory, Second Stage),Journey to the West (Goodman, Huntington Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory), The Odyssey(Lookingglass, Goodman, McCarter Theatre Center, Seattle Repertory), Mirror of the Invisible World(Goodman), Silk (Goodman), Arabian Nights (Lookingglass, Manhattan Theatre Club, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Berkeley Repertory, Kansas City Repertory Theatre), Argonautika (Lookingglass, Berkeley Repertory, Shakespeare Theatre Company, McCarter), The Secret in the Wings (Lookingglass, Berkeley Repertory, McCarter, Seattle Repertory), Eleven Rooms of Proust (Lookingglass, About Face Theatre and Goodman co-producing) and a new opera with Philip Glass called Galileo Galilei (Goodman, The Barbican in London and Brooklyn Academy of Music). In addition, Ms. Zimmerman has directed Shakespeare's Pericles and All's Well That Ends Well for the Goodman and Henry VIII and Measure for Measure at New York Theatre Festival's Shakespeare in the Park. She made her Metropolitan Opera directorial debut in 2007 with Lucia di Lammermoor. Subsequent Met productions include Armida and La Sonnambula. All three have been simulcast in movie theaters worldwide. Most recently, Ms. Zimmerman directed her new adaption of Leonard Bernstein's Candide which opened the Goodman's 2010/2011 season. It was subsequently performed at the Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Huntington Theatre Company. In February 2012, she directed the world premiere of White Snake, her adaptation of a Chinese fable, at Oregon Shakespeare Festival; it will appear at the Goodman in 2014, and was Ms. Zimmerman's first original work to have its premiere outside of Chicago.
