Biography Jerome Robbins is world-renowned as a choreographer of ballets as well as a choreographer/director in the theatre, movies and on television. His Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, Peter Pan, The King and I, West Side Story, Gypsy, Funny Girl and Fiddler on the Roof. His last Broadway production, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, won six Tony Awards, including Best Director and Best Musical.
Among the more than 60 ballets he created are Fancy Free, on which On the Town is based; Afternoon of a Faun; The Concert; Dances at a Gathering; In the Night; In G Major; Other Dances; Glass Pieces; A Suite of Dances for Mikhail Baryshnikov; and West Side Story Suite, which are in the repertories of New York City Ballet and other major dance companies throughout the world.
Mr. Robbins won two Academy Awards for West Side Story, four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards, an Emmy Award, the Screen Directors Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. He was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient and was awarded the Chevalier dans l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur.
