Biography
Neena Beber is a playwright, screenwriter and lyricist. Her plays include the Obie-award winning Jump/Cut, as well as A Foreign Body, The Dew Point, Hard Feelings, Tomorrowland, A Common Vision, The Brief but Exemplary Life of the Living Goddess (as told by herself) and Misreadings, all published by Samuel French. She is a recipient of a Lilly Award, the L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award, and Sloan and Amblin Commissions, and was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. A member of the BMI Lehman Engel Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop, Neena has contributed to Lincoln Center's Songbook Series: Broadway's Future (composer Ross Baum) and to Songs from an Immigrant by frequent collaborator Jaime Lozano. Other musical collaborations include Jade Alaska (composer Ben Diskant, commissioned by TheaterWorks USA) and the 24-Hour Musicals. Opera libretto: Ulysses, Home and Kassandra (composer Anthony Brandt, premiering at Rice University and Opera in the Heights). TV episodic work: Strangers (Facebook); Ballers (HBO); Imposters (Bravo). Her adaptation of Maurice Sendak's Little Bear garnered Emmy and Ace Award nominations. Film: How to Deal and the short Bad Dates (dir. Des McAnuff). B.A. Harvard University; M.F.A N.Y.U.'s Tisch School of the Arts. An alumna of New Dramatists, Neena currently teaches in the MFA playwriting program at Columbia University and sits on the Advisory Board of The Orchard Project.
