Brian Petuch
Librettist

Biography
Described as “narratively limitless... peaceful, violent, and transcendent.” (American Composers Forum), Brian Petuch's music inhabits extreme contrasts. Reflection vs. celebration, tenderness vs. aggression, saturation vs. sparseness, a large scale sixteen hour-long work vs. one minute miniatures are all among Petuch's output. He frequently incorporates electronics and other recorded sounds into live acoustic settings in order to expand the possibilities of the concert hall. His works have premiered at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, 911 Memorial at Liberty Park, EMPAC, Constellation, MASS MoCA, and Joyce Theatre, and featured by Albany Symphony, the New York Youth Symphony, andPlay, Bang on a Can, Contemporaneous, and Bearthoven.

Petuch recently premiered his first evening length opera, Portrait and a Dream, an opera about Jackson Pollock told through the lens of Lee Krasner and archival recordings of the people who surrounded his life. Petuch is married to soprano Kendra Berentsen who is a major collaborative force and inspiration in his creative life. Berentsen is currently writing a libretto for their new evening length opera for full orchestra, narrator, and electronics.
