Biography HAUI is an award-winning mixed-media artist who eschews categorization. Over the past decade, HAUI has amassed a diverse body of work synthesized from theatre, dance, opera, film, and visual arts. His art is diverse, much like his DNA, exploring themes of race, gender, and sexual orientation. He bridges the gap between art and activism, shedding light on forgotten narratives relegated to the peripheries of history. HAUI has collaborated with leading arts organizations, including the Canadian Opera Company, CBC, APTN, the Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, Wildseed Centre for Arts and Activism. He is also part of the Young Vic Creators Program in the UK.
His work to date encompasses directing (both stage and screen), designing (video projections and visual arts), and devising (playwrighting, poetry, producing, and performing). Some career highlights include directing his feature film debut "Mixedup," collaborating with trans filmmaker Jack Fox, as well as partnering with the largest LGBTQ+ network, OUTtv.
Upcoming projects feature HAUI directing, designing, and producing "Private Flowers," a site-specific dance installation at Toronto's National Historic Site, Fort York. He will also direct a short film titled "Happy," delving into themes of queer mental health. Additionally, HAUI is writing and directing "Aportia Chryptych: A Black Opera for Portia White," set to be performed at the Canadian Opera Company in 2024.
