Dreamkeepers
Composer:David Carlson
Librettist:Aden Ross
Synopsis
An extraordinary story of the intersection of inner and outer life on an Indian reservation. In the first act (The Outerworld) a young Ute woman, Ela, returns to the reservation because her grandmother is dying. There she encounters a doctor Adam Wade (not of Indian background) with whom she has an unresolved relationship. Their reminiscences of their initial attraction are interrupted by Sloan, a prosecuting attorney pursuing claims against the tribal lands. His sinister interest in Ela, causes Adam to leave. Adam is injured in an automobile accident and Ela’s grandmother urges her to save him by finding him in the Spirit world. The second act (Spirit World) concerns Ela’s quest and confrontation with her “shadow” (Sloan in various guises). The struggles of Adam and Ela to find themselves and each other lead to the climax: Ela defies the power of her ultimate enemy, the one within. As Grandmother (now a spirit herself) sings good-bye, Ela and Adam return to the Outerworld, affirming the transforming power of love. courtesy of Carl Fischer, Inc.
