Synopsis
The work, set in New Mexico, has as its background the Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. It centers on Helen Chalmers, who believes in the "Oneness and All." She reveals her philosophy in the closing number, "Journal Aria." The story also involves Helen's estrangement from her daughter Emily, the redemption of Tilano, a young Pueblo Indian who has turned to drink and Jack Turner, Helen's lover.
