The Merchant and the Pauper
Composer:Paul Schoenfield
Librettist:Margaret B. Stearns
Synopsis
In this allegory, a prosperous merchant takes a pauper and his family under his wing with the expectation that the merchant's son will marry the pauper's strikingly attractive daughter, Beauty. When the pauper becomes emperor, he tries to have the merchant's son killed to open up the way to other prospective suitors for Beauty. The pauper's wife intervenes and aids in the son's escape. The two young people are reunited when Beauty is captured by pirates and is taken to the same island to which the son had fled. The action unfolds through the narrator, portrayed as Rabbi Nachman, who reveals the significant plot details as he talks to his congregants.
