The Merchant and the Pauper
Composer:Paul Schoenfield
Librettist:Margaret B. Stearns
Synopsis
The story is a multifaceted allegory of the rescue of the Jews from Egypt and the coming of the Messiah, but on the surface it is a magical tale reminiscent of THE MAGIC FLUTE. When the pauper's wife is kidnapped and the merchant brings her home, their virtue survives a series of trials and they are rewarded with children: he with a son and she with a daughter, who is the most beautiful child ever seen on earth. The two young people are promised to each other, but torn apart when the pauper becomes an emperor, a pirate kidnaps his daughter, and the merchant's son is exiled to an exotic island—but they are united at last to rule the world.
