Synopsis
In this story, set at an estate in the 1890s, the young playwright Constantine is attracted to Nina, who is to perform in his play. Nina becomes drawn to another guest, Trigorin, a famous writer, who is currently the lover of the famous actress irina Arkadina, Constantine's mother. At the same time Masha reveals to Dr. Dom that she loves Constantine. During a picnic, Constantine, angered by Nina's interest in Trigorin, places a dead seagull at her feet and recounts the story of a young girl brought to grief by her lover. Constantine fails in a suicide attempt, and Masha decides to wed the schoolteacher Medvedenko.

Two years pass, and as Constantine has predicted, Trigorin has abandoned Nina. She returns to the estate, revealing that she still loves Trigorin. When she leaves, Constantine destroys his manuscripts and succeeds in killing himself.
