Synopsis
Madeleine Lee, a rich widow from New York, comes to Washington, where she falls in love with Senator Silas Raitcliffe. Esther Dudley, a photographer, falls in love with the Reverend Stephen Hazard. The men propose marriage and the women initially accept them. However, as the realities of both politics and personal power become more clear to the women, they eventually reject the men. The opera is declarred a comedy with a happy, if bitter, ending.
