The True Last Words of Dutch Schultz
Composer:Eric Salzman
Librettist:Valeria Vasilevski
Synopsis
Based on the actual words of Dutch Schultz, Public Enemy No. 1, as he lay dying in a Newark hospital after being shot by a rival mobster in the mid-1930s. During the interrogation, Dutch's whole life flashes before him. His mother appears and talks to her little boy. Dutch is on ice skates as he wheels and deals with his mob. "Speak Easy," a film, accompanied by swing violin, shows images of the real Dutch and The Prohibition Era while Dutch's girlfriend appears and sings a Speakeasy number. The ice man comes as Dutch tries to rise up from his hospital bed. One by one, the mobsters desert the dying man as his strength ebbs away.
