Composer:Juliet Palmer
Librettist:Brian Clarence Hulse
Synopsis
At the beginning of the opera, Sykes enters to find Delia folding laundry and singing to herself. He is carrying a whip and a box, which we later learn contains a live rattlesnake. He sneaks up behind her and throws his whip over her shoulder. Frightened, Delia tells him not to do it again because the whip looks like a snake and she is afraid of them. Sykes gets angry at Delia for doing white people's laundry. Delia defends it as the only way they can make a living. Sykes tells her how skinny she is and how much fatter his girlfriend is. He tells Delia that he can't stand to live with her and that he's going to get rid of her so his girlfriend can move in. Despondent, Delia sings how men can't be decent if it isn't in their nature. She asks Sykes what's in the box he brought with him. Sykes tells her it's a present and to open it. Delia screams in horror when she discovers a live snake inside. She begs Sykes to kill it. He refuses. They fight more and say how much they hate each other. Sykes goes to bed. When he's asleep, Delia takes the box with the snake and places it on the bed. She gingerly opens the lid.
