Synopsis
The opera is bi-lingual, English and Spanish. Anna Maria, 16, feels oppressed by her immigrant father. His insistence on raising her to follow the cultural traditions of their Latino heritage provokes a rift in the family. (She seeks, with the encouragement of her brother, Rudolfo, to become an "American girl," accepted by her peers in school). Abuela, her grandmother, works hard to teach tolerance to both her and her father, Esteban. However, her efforts are unsuccessful, and Anna Maria runs away from home. After her grandmother's death, Anna Maria returns for the funeral, where both she and her father desire reconciliation — but can only achieve it when Abuela's 'ghost' reappears and helps them find a bridge to the future. Esteban realizes Anna Maria's need for independence, and Anna Maria learns of the importance of honoring her past. A study curriculum has been created by Central City Opera to further enhance the opera's intention to entertain, educate and inform young audiences and their families. (Ages 12 - 92).
