In the Shadow of the Glen
Composer:Nancy Van de Vate
Librettist:Nancy Van de Vate
Synopsis
Nora Burke, a poor woman in rural Ireland around 1900, sometimes talks with men who pass by her cottage. Dan, her old and unkind husband, pretends to have died to trick her into revealing her hopes for a better life after his death. A tramp seeking a place to sleep enters the cottage. He stays with the body while Nora goes out to look for Michael, a young herdsman who sometimes worked for her husband. While she is out, Dan reveals to the tramp that he is not dead. Nora returns with Michael, the tramp falls asleep by the hearth, and Nora and Michael discuss getting married after a suitable interval. Dan sneezes, gets up, and announces he is throwing Nora out, to slowly starve to death while walking the roads. Nora wants to stay, but Dan is unrelenting. The kindly tramp takes Nora with him, while the weak Michael and gloating Dan drink whiskey together.
