The Dreamers
Composer:David Conte
Librettist:Philip Littell
Synopsis
American tragi-comedy on the life and times of Mariano Vallejo. In THE DREAMERS, California is seen as the place where people come to fulfill their dreams, and the dreams are as varied as those who dream them. The Bear Flag revolt of 1846, when a crowd of rag-taggle Yankees arrested and incarcerated Mexican military commander Mariano Vallejo and declared California an American territory, lingers as a nightmare in Vallejo's mind. His daughter's fancy turns toward one of the handsome American soldiers; his wife longs to return home to Mexico. California seems big enough to hold the dreams of a lonely Indian woman, the last of her tribe, and a black man who is trying to earn enough money to buy his wife out of slavery. The opera captures a formative moment in American history, in which characters are separated by their sexual, cultural, and racial differences and brought together by their dreams and their longing for a new home.
