Something New for the Zoo
Composer:Lee Hoiby
Librettist:Dudley Huppler
Synopsis
Soviet forces continued to occupy Vienna long after the end of World War II. Emma Leintraub, the glittering diva of the Staatsoper, has discovered an elixir with which she can transform men into animals. She uses it on the commanders of the occupying Soviet forces, then sends the animals to the Vienna zoo. She orders her manservant Heinrich to prepare for a visit by the amorous General Vorchieleff, to whom she slips the potion. Unfortunately Heinrich accidentally imbibes some of the concoction himself and turns into a gorilla. Leintraub is chagrined, but promises to turn him back into a man; meantime she phones General Malinoff
