La Cantatrice Chauve/The Bald Soprano
Composer:Gérard Calvi
Librettist:Eugene Ionesco
Synopsis
The entire action takes place today, during one evening, in one single set: a bourgeois interior in the suburbs of London at the home of an English couple, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The atmosphere is similar to a Marx Brothers' setting. The extravagant comments of the Smith couple flow easily back and forth. They are interrupted by the arrival of their English guests, Mr. and Mrs. Martin, who make the surprising discovery that they are husband and wife. Then, the doorbell rings. It is the Captain of the Firemen, and as there is no fire, he tells them four crazy anecdotes. The Captain leaves. The foursome stays. There ensues an explosion of language, and the characters begin a frenzied dance, a battle, a final ballet...Curtain.
