The Whitechapel Whirlwind
Composer:Howard Fredrics
Librettist:Jacob Sager Weinstein
Synopsis
Jack "Kid" Berg, the great British-Jewish boxing champion of the 1920s-40s, along with Italian American boxer, Tony Canzoneri, and Afro-Cuban boxer, "Kid" Chocolate shared a common experience growing up in poverty-stricken communities, where the the only ticket out was either a life of crime or the boxing arena. The opera traces Kid Berg's rise to stardom from his humble London East End upbringing through his years as a free-wheeling matinee idol figure who had daliances with the likes of Mae West and Kiki Roberts (the mistress of the notorious gangster, Legs Diamond) and into his later years when he still believed he could make one more comeback. For Jack, celebrity was everything.
