Mapping Venus
Composer:Sorrel Hays
Librettist:Gertrude SteinSorrel Hays
Synopsis
Gertrude Stein's play "A List" provides the comedic framework for this story about mapping the planet Venus and how to find the names of your personal cartography. Gertrude, as Surveyor, summons women into acidic Venusian weather to hear their preferences for territory. Act One ends with the blinding vision of Hildegard von Bingen as the Mother of Us All, encompassing a cosmic map of human consciousness. Act Two goes about remapping Earth because as Gertrude says, "Venus is just too damn hot."
