A Hill of Bones
Composer:Persis Parshall Vehar
Librettist:Michael Ehrenreich
Synopsis
A Hill of Bones explores the idea of land ownership and presents conflicting attitudes towards its use through white and Native American characters. The story, by libettist Michael Ehrenreich, revolves around the excavation of an Indian burial ground and the mysterious illness that befalls the excavator’s daughter. Two Native Americans, a youth & a Clan Mother, persuade him to stop the excavation and to fight the negligent disposal of toxic waste on reservation land. The aim of the opera is to heighten people’s awareness about the environment, develop multi-cultural understanding, and to expose young people to the operatic form.
