The Golden Apple
Composer:Bruce Trinkley
Librettist:Jason Charnesky
Synopsis
The story transplants Homer's Iliad and Odyssey from ancient Greece (8th century BC) to the rural village of Angel's Roost, WA at the turn of the 20th century. In this deconstruction of Homer, Helen is the village floozy and Paris is a traveling salesman who abducts her in his balloon. Ulysses, a pious soldier who has just returned from the Spanish-American War decides, along with his soldier friends, that it is their duty to find Helen and bring her back. The deities of Homer's epics are represented in the work as meddling villagers who gossip their time away.
