Four Corners Ensemble
The Bandit Queen
Composer:Shirish Korde
Librettist:Sonya Friedman
Synopsis
Phoolan Devi, a low-caste Hindu girl from the ravines of central India, is married off at age eleven, flees, and is kidnapped by bandits. At first violently abused, Phoolan becomes bandit chief, famous for her daring, compassion toward women, and hatred of high-caste men. Eventually, she surrenders to the government. The rise of politicians from the lower-castes leads to Phoolan's release from prison and election to Parliament, where she fights, peacefully, for human rights. In July 2001, Phoolan is murdered by unidentified gunmen and mourned throughout the nation.
