Synopsis Coronato and Crispino love Nina, who has a brother named Moracchio. The Baron and Evarist love Candida, who has an aunt named Geltrude, who is quite stern and too protective and very shrewd in business. She fancies Timoteo. That is, Geltrude does, not Candida… Timoteo owns an apothecary and is secretly enamoured of Geltrude, but doesn’t know Geltrude feels the same for him… And, oh, Candida loves Evarist, not the Baron. Nina loves Crispino, not Coronato. And there’s a Count. He loves himself! And then there’s this FAN! Candida’s fan fell and, well, broke. Evarist went to Susanna, the one with the shop, to buy a new one. THE FAN! Candida saw and suspected the worst… Candida agrees to marry the Baron. Yes, we know she doesn’t love him, but she’s bent upon revenge. Any questions? We didn’t think so. [excerpted from opening Ensemble of Act II] courtesy of Theodore Presser Company
