Synopsis
The First Wordexplores a mother-daughter relationship in the past and present. The mother has a fatal illness but is not afraid to explore the world or accept change. Delia, her grown daughter, is shy, conflicted, and immature. A male character plays three interrelated roles: The Doctor, The Father, and Reverend Cowper. The other character, the Pied Piper, can be a dancer. Through her fear and grief in the face of her mother's illness, Delia comes to realize her own creative spirit. This is a highly lyrical chamber opera, composed in a contemporary musical style.
