The Rape of the Lock
Composer:Deborah Mason
Librettist:Deborah Mason
Synopsis
In every scene, the subject is always the Battle of the Sexes. The young lady Belinda awakens as her "Guardian Sylph" Ariel warns her in a dream to beware of "Man." She "arms" herself at her toilette. At Hampton Court, Ariel summons his Sylphs to protect her (and especially her petticoat). Lessons in "The Use of the Snuff Box" and "The Regiment of the Fan," are sported from the contemporary journal, ^The Spectator` by Addison & Steele. Belinda challenges the Baron to a fierce competition (a card game, vividly enacted by dancers). The defeated Baron maliciously snips a lock of Belinda's hair, which act he blames on the (newly fashionable) coffee. After a visit to the Underworld (The Cave of Spleen) and a melee of flirtations and snubbery, the Baron is vanquished when Belinda throws his snuff at him and he loses his poise in a tremendous, orgasmic sneeze.
