Kali
Composer:Jarrad Powell
Tony Prabowo
Librettist:Goenawan Mohamed
Synopsis
Javanese librettist Goenawan Mohamed has set the main narrative of KALI in his native Indonesia, specifically the Bali of 1965 in the months following the coup that brought the corrupt Indonesian government of General Suharto to power. The libretto consists of six scenes in three acts that weave together the events of those tumultuous days with allegories drawn from the great Hindu epic poem the "Mahabharatha". KALI examines the myths of human suffering and transformation through the eyes of the Hindu goddess of Death; Kali, as she confronts Queen Gandhari, the blind king Destarasta, Prince Yudistira, and the beautiful princess Draupadi.
