Death of Enkidu
Composer:Harry Somers
Librettist:Martin Kinch
Synopsis
Death of Enkidu, from the epic poem of Gigamesh, is a tale of monsters from the dawn of civilization. The gods of the ancient walled city of Erech create Enkidu, a champion to challenge the wise but despotic prince Gilgamesh. Enkidu and Gilgamesh eventually become best friends. When Enkidu tells Gilgamesh about his nightmares, Gilgamesh makes an offering to the god Shamash who advises him to battle the terrifying monster Khumbaba. Gilgamesh's victory over Khumbaba, however, is diminished by the resulting death of Enkidu.
