Henry's Wife
Composer:Randall Eng
Librettist:Alexis Bernier
Synopsis
Almost immediately upon his arrival at Henry's estate, Daniel realizes that there is a much more personal than professional reason for his being there. He experiences "love at first sight" with Pascal and unprovoked antagonism from Marisa. And it seems that he is being interviewed by Henry rather than the other way around. Finally, Henry reveals the real purpose of his having been allowed in, and it has very little to do with the “interview”. It seems that for a long time, Henry has been dreaming at night of his late, first wife. The dream life he shares with her has become more and more important, more intimate, more satisfying, more real to him than his waking life. And it is the dreamed directives of Henry's late wife, given voice through Henry, which all four characters must find ways to now accept and follow. It was she who knew that the meeting of Daniel and Pascal must take place, she who knew how they would react to one another, she who knew that Marisa must find a way to enter the world outside of her all too comfortable confines, she who knew that Henry must live out the remainder of his days alone so that he may freefall exclusively into his dream life with her. And though it may look like a kind of madness, it will be a madness in which he will be able to complete his creative work at last.
