Synopsis
Act I: King Ceyx informs his wife, Alcyone, that he must visit a distant oracle. Alcyone begs him not to leave. His ship is caught in a storm and he drowns. In her dream, Alcyone sees a shipwrecked Ceyx and understands that he has died. She returns to the dock where they parted and as the waves pull the figure to shore, she recognizes it as her husband. Act II: Cadmus discovers his soldiers slaughtered in lair of the Serpent of Mars. The Serpent and Cadmus battle. Cadmus hears, "You too will be a serpent to be gazed upon." Cadmus sows the serpent's teeth in the ground as seeds. The earth begins to stir and out grow skeletal warriors fully dressed for battle. Act III: Jupiter and Mercury visit the Phrygian countryside asking for food and shelter. They are refused, until they arrive at the cottage of Philemon and Baucis. Jupiter wants to destroy the entire village, but Mercury persuades him to spare Philemon and Baucis. They ask that they be allowed to die together. Jupiter grants their wish, promising them that upon their death, they will both be transformed into trees, a linden and an oak.
