Processions
Composer:James Callahan
Librettist:Mark Pizzato
Synopsis
Three choirs of pilgrims process through the church, bearing offerings and singing to their God. When the pilgrims depart, a smaller group remains to keep a vigil through the night. They have a vision of other people who are provoked into their own processions due to tragic circumstances: starving villagers in a desert, guerilla soldiers who take over the chapel, mothers who are protesting the disappearance of their children, and refugees fleeing into a mountain pass. In the end, the visionary experience of the vigil choir collides with the processions and prayers of the returning pilgrims.
