The Green Child
Composer:Ashi Day
Librettist:Ashi Day
Synopsis
"The Green Child," a mini-play for soprano and clarinet, is a 15-minute adaptation of Marcel Schwob's French fairytale, "The Green She-Devil," itself inspired by the possibly-true 12th-Century legend of the green children of Woolpit. A little girl finds a mysterious green child (played by the clarinet) sobbing alone in the deep dark woods. The green child speaks her own language and is rumored to be a she-devil. As the story unfolds, both girls rescue each other, one from the wilderness, and one from a society forcing a poor girl into a life with few choices. The libretto includes both original text and adaptations of nursery rhymes and folk songs. This piece can be performed as a concert work, partially-staged, or fully staged, and while appropriate for children, is written for adults. An alternate 10-minute version is available.
