On the Threshold of Winter
Composer:Michael Hersch
Librettist:Michael Hersch
Synopsis
On the Threshold of Winter portrays an individual's physical, psychological and emotional progression through illness. The sole character is gravely ill woman who struggles with her circumstances, and much of Act I consists of protest, rage, bitterness, and resistance to mortality, with brief fantasies and glimpses of understanding or acceptance of the inevitable. In Act II, there is recognition of and compliance with her “terrible . . . passage". The libretto is based on Marin Sorescu’s death-bed book of poems, The Bridge, which are often presented here in fragments, sometimes leaps from one phrase or image to another, but by the end of the opera the text and the music hint at resignation, if not consolation.
