In Every Grain of Sand
Composer:Gary Fagin
Librettist:Gary Fagin
Synopsis
"In Every Grain of Sand" addresses one of the seminal issues of our time: the climate crisis that threatens the future viability of the earth on which we live. The libretto is based on the Book of Genesis; writings of, and testimony from, writers and environmental advocates such as Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, who many credit for starting the environmental movement; James Hansen, the NASA scientist whose 1988 testimony before the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources brought the threat of climate change to the political arena; and others. The title is taken from a quote by Rachel Carson, "“In every outthrust headland, in every curving beach, in every grain of sand there is the story of the earth.” "In Every Grain Of Sand" relates how we have arrived at this pivotal moment, and expresses, through the medium of music drama, the challenge and hope of coming together to insure the continued stability of humanity on this planet.
