Synopsis Prelude. 0:00 Scene 1 00:52 opens on a tavern where three friends Jackie
(bass), Jimmy (Baritone), and Johnny (Tenor) sing about enjoying life,
but there is a mysterious patron who sits (aka, Death, tenor) 5:21 who
tells them 'Death' has come to call on the village where most have
already fallen. The three drunk friends become incense at this man,
Death, and vow to find him and teach him a lesson, or to kill him.
Scene
2: 9:26 The Town Square, they wander through a parade of mourners for
recent ones died and spot a figure in the distance. This must be him, as
they approach, it is an old man (death) 10:55 who begs them to kill him
because Death won't take him. The three friends bent on their quest
asks where the old man last saw death. He tells them under the old oak
tree.
Scene
3: 16:00 When the men arrive, they find nothing, then suddenly a
splendid treasure of gold. They decide to wait till night to carry it
off. Jackie says that two will guard the treasure and one will go to
town to get wine to celebrate later. They draw straws which are rigged
so Johnny will go.
Scene
4: 19:21 As Johnny heads into town, he suspects something's up with the
other two. He goes to an apothecary shop for poison for the wine. He
complains of two "rats" he can't get rid of. There again, Death, says he
has just the potion that will do the trick.
Scene
5: 24:11 Johnny returns with the wine. Jimmy is hiding and jumps out to
stab him in the back. As Johnny dies, Jackie also stabs Jimmy in the
back. Jackie sees the wine and decides to celebrate, but of course the
wine is poisoned.
Scene
6: 26:35 Death sings, "although many think they can cheat the way that
things must be, all will have their date with me." And continues his
eternal dance across the world.
