Dessa Rose
Composer:Stephen Flaherty
Librettist:Lynn Ahrens
Synopsis
Based on the novel of the same name by Sherley Anne Williams, Dessa Rose is the powerful and emotional story of two women, one black and one white, who manage to save themselves and one another from an unforgiving world. Set in the Antebellum South, passionate and innocent Dessa Rose is a young slave who escapes from a prison where she has been sentenced to death for participating in an uprising. Pregnant and desperate, she finds her way to a derelict, secluded plantation, where an abandoned wife named Ruth unknowingly harbors runaway slaves. Unwillingly bound together by their dangerous circumstances, and despite their prejudice and mistrust of one another, these two women become fellow travelers and unlikely friends, handing down their story for generations to come, in this thrilling musical drama with a powerful message.
