Synopsis
Based on the novel of the same name by Sherley Anne Williams, Dessa Rose is
the powerful and emotional story of two women, one black and one white,
who manage to save themselves and one another from an unforgiving
world. Set in the Antebellum South, passionate
and innocent Dessa Rose is a young slave who escapes from a prison
where she has been sentenced to death for participating in an uprising.
Pregnant and desperate, she finds her way to a derelict, secluded
plantation, where an abandoned wife named Ruth unknowingly harbors
runaway slaves. Unwillingly bound together by their dangerous
circumstances, and despite their prejudice and mistrust of one another,
these two women become fellow travelers and unlikely friends, handing down their story for generations to come, in this thrilling musical drama with a powerful message.
