Sukey in the Dark
Composer:Thomas Whitman
Librettist:Nathalie Anderson
Synopsis
Sukey in the Dark reconsiders the myth of Cupid and Psyche, where a resentful Venus sends her son Cupid to make the beautiful mortal Psyche love a monster, but Cupid falls in love with her himself. He hides her in a palace where he comes to her only at night and she never sees his face. Eventually her sisters persuade her to light a lamp to see and kill the (they believe) monstrous lover, but instead she sees the God of Love, who wakes when lamp-oil falls on his shoulder, and then flees, saying “Love cannot live where there’s no trust.” In the original myth, Psyche seeks help from Venus, who sets her tasks intended to destroy her; but eventually the lovers are united -- Cupid, Eros, Sexual Love; and Psyche, the Soul, the Mind.
