Stonewall
Composer:Iain Bell
Librettist:Mark Campbell
Synopsis
Stonewall is an opera about the uprising at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, a watershed moment in the history of the LGBTQ community, Part I introduces a central group of characters, including Maggie, a butch lesbian who is harassed by a stranger and is mocked by the police; Carlos, a Dominican-American recently fired from a Catholic school where he taught English; Maynard, an African-American man celebrating his eighteenth birthday as “Renata”; Andy, a homeless seventeen-year-old hustler who lives on the streets; Leah, a women who has undergone aversion therapy; Sarah, a transgender woman celebrating the first year anniversary of her transition; and Larry, an NYPD deputy inspector, and his small squad of police officers who have been ordered to conduct a raid on the club where these lives—and more—will all intersect. Part II begins in a celebratory mood—but that is ended abruptly when the police conduct a raid and the patrons are divided into groups and harassed. After Maggie protests and punches an officer, the patrons find their voice and revolt against the police, joining the growing crowd of protesters that has assembled on the street outside. Part III occurs the next morning. The central group of characters awaits the first light of day, aware that something momentous occurred the night before, but unsure about the next steps.
