The story centers on a woman's driving desire to have male children, and it takes its inspiration from sub-Saharan folk tales. The Mother leaves her husband, the Water, after she bears a daughter, who she kills, and becomes the lover of the River, who promises to give her sons. But when the sons are maimed, through her carelessness, she abandons them and, by the end, brings pain and death to herself and her offspring.
