The story, set in 1903 in the Canadian Rockies, opens just before the deadly Crow's Nest Pass landslide on the north slope of Turtle Mountain. The people of the town of Frank, which lies beneath the mountain, cope with the immense tragedy, which is predicted by an old Native American woman.
