This opera takes its inspiration from an episode in the life of Eugene O’Neill. One evening, after a fight with his wife, O’Neill walked out of his house into a blizzard. The playwright became disoriented, fell into a snow bank and gave up. A young policeman passing by noticed his feet and rescued him. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner will create an original libretto in response to this chance event in the life of one of America’s greatest playwrights. Composer Jeanine Tesori, a two-time Drama Desk Award winner, first collaborated with Kushner on the critically acclaimed Caroline, or Change (2004); she also wrote the score for his production of Mother Courage and Her Children, part of the 2006 Shakespeare in the Park season in New York City. In addition, Tesori and Kushner have been selected for a Metropolitan Opera / Lincoln Center Theater commission.
