The opera takes place on a country estate in Sweden during a Midsummer Eve celebration in the 1880s. Miss Julie is the jaded daughter of a count and is engaged to Neils. She treats him very badly, and he breaks off their engagement in disgust. She then seduces her father's valet, John, in front of his fiancée, Christine, and steals from the count to finance John's plan of escaping to Lake Como. In desperation, she takes John's suggestion and slashes her wrists with his razor.
